The soccer blog
Why a soccer blog? For the past couple of weeks we have been working on a blog about soccer. During these weeks i have learnt a lot and remembered a lot from others and myself. We chose soccer because it is a group sport, it revolves around many people and we thought it perfectly encompasses a group assignment. We also completely love the sport. Soccer brings people together and brings out the best in people by contrasting and working off of every person involved a group assignment parallels this, through working together we were able to come up with ideas and create a blog which represents not only each member individually but also as a group. We, like players on a soccer side, worked together to achieve a goal, everyone had a certain position, everyone played a part. The posts are a mix of personal, historical and factual information and hopefully you find it as interesting reading it as we did writing it. -Michael

Barcelona leads the count in official titles won with 79 trophies (the three Inter-Cities Fairs Cup's won by Barcelona are included since the tournament is the predecessor of the UEFA Cup and recognized by FIFA), while Real Madrid has won 76 trophies. Along with Athletic Bilbao, they are the only clubs in La Liga to have never been relegated. They are sometimes identified with opposing political positions, with Real Madrid viewed as representing Spanish nationalism and Barcelona viewed as representing Catalanism. The rivalry is regarded as one of the biggest in world football. _Samiul Hoque

Zinedine Zidane, the Legend's headbutt !
The infamous head butt by Zinedine Zidane
He is one of the best players the world has ever seen. When you talk about talent, calmness , team man and so on, he has every bit of it ! At club level Zidane won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid, 2 Serie A league championships with Juventus and an Intercontinental Cup and a UEFA Super Cup each with both aforementioned sides. At international level, Zidane won FIFA World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000 with France. He won the FIFA World Player of the Year 3 times, and Ballon D'Or once. He was also chosen as the best player of the year in Ligue 1, in Serie A and in La Liga and was awarded the 2006 FIFA World Cup Golden Ball, and European Championship Player of the tournament during his career. Zidane retired from professional football after the 2006 World Cup. He currently holds the post of Real Madrid Director of Football. On 31 July 2012, Real Madrid announced that as soon as he completes management qualification, he will begin training to be a coach while at the same time coaching Real Madrid's youth academy.
However, his last match was abit of sad. He lost his cool and head butted Materazzi. He got into a alot of controversy post that incident. Despite all these bad publicity , he still his one of most respected players in the world
West Ham vs Wigan - 20th April at Upton Park
West Ham faced Wigan this Saturday. Playing at home all they needed was one more win to secure themselves in the premiere league this season and avoid relegation into the lower division. The game started off slow with no real action. Wigan dominated possession and were the only ones who looked likely to score. This changed however when in the 26th minute Matt Jarvis recieved the ball on the left wing, dribbling forward he sent a lazy cross into the penalty box, eluding all players the ball met the goal untouched due to the keepers confusion following the jumble of players in front of him. With the score at 1- 0 the Hammers confidence sky rocketed and the remainder of the game was a one sided affair. In the 80th minute, West Ham scored again, this time with a beautiful volley by Captain Kevin Nolan, marking his 100th goal for the club. The ball was chipped in off a free kick and headed down by Andy Carroll who then bicycle kicked the ball straight to Nolan who finished the job. West Ham are showing a real positive difference this season and I look forward to their remaining games. - James
Matt Jarvis' cross, somehow reaches the corner post for goal one.

West Ham
My favorite soccer team is West Ham. Throughout our families history we have always been Hammers. Each generation has cheered on different players, from Frank Lampard to Andy Carroll, Bobby Moore to Geoff Hurst. These players have played important roles in the history of football and history in general. Bobby Moore led England to victory in the 1966 World cup final against Germany, beating them 4 - 2. Geoff Hurst scored a hat-trick in the game, the only player to do so in a world cup final. Frank Lampard is a prominent English soccer player and one of the figure heads for the game at large. We will always support West Ham, whether they are far down on the table or coming number one. The team is going through changes at the moment and they have been given the Olympic stadium, that was built for the London Olympics, this change will bring on a new era in West Ham history and a new it's a change that i am very exited for. - Michael

Soccer a Poem by Michael
The morning is new, the day has begun,
it's time to prepare to have some fun,
soccer with friends no better way to live,
goals to score, passes to give,
i hope our keeper keeps out the goals,
he's looking quite lonely, between those poles,
the ball come to me,
i shoot first then see,
the ball hit the net,
i'm glad i didn't fret,
but i had fun today scoring goals,
soccer is my fave sport. :P
- Michael
Why I like scoccer
I remember when i was little boy, my mother bought me a soccer set, it came with; Goalkeeper gloves, a ball, two cones to mark out the goal and a pair of plastic boots that I enthusiastically cramped my feet into. I'd never played soccer before, sure i'd seen it plastered on the family television set, my father greedily lapping it up with ravenous eyes, his dinner growing increasingly cold whilst his warm beer takes the spotlight. But i'd never actually touched a soccer ball. I trudge down to the nearest park, ball in hand, boots on feet, cones on head. I mark the goal out and set the ball at my feet. My brother wrapped up in a winter coat stands in the goal, annoyed i have dragged him down to the field on such a cold morning, he refuses to put on the gloves, instead he loiters in my way hands buried deep in his pockets. I let out a war cry and kick the ball with all my might aiming for the left, i plan on rocketing it into the corner of the goal and across the far side of the park, the ghastly hike to retrieve it hardly seems to matter as my right foot makes contact with the dew infected ball. The speed in which it travels amazes me, the chances of my uninterested brother saving it seems minuscule, but he does. The ball strikes him right in the face knocking him to the floor, blood flowing out of his nose as he whimpers on the ground like a little girl. I laugh while he cries out for Mum. That was the first time i played soccer and I've been in love with it ever since. - James
The popularity of Soccer
Why is soccer such a popular sport? It is one of the most popular sports played world wide but it there a reason? There are many... Players are paid excessive amounts of money to score goals with their feet and heads (and hands). There are vicious tackles, fights, spectacular goals and Zinedine Zidane headbutting a dude in the chest. Hooligans go on rampages which isn't a good thing, but it proves that their is a lot of pride and dedication towards soccer clubs, or possibly it proves people like having an excuse to punch someone. But for the sake of this post, I'll assume it's the former. Soccer is popular because it allows people to become part of something and join with others to cheer on their team, to cry and laugh at their club together and to jeer and hiss at their rivals with unconcerned malice. It brings people together and most importantly it creates joy. It's a beautiful sport. - James

Top 10 Premier League goals of all time
Best goals in the Premier League
Here is a video of the top 10 premier goals of all time, coming in at number one is Paolo Di Canio who plays for West Ham, my favorite team. The ball is crossed in from the right Midfielder, Di Canio meets it on the volley, striking it with his right foot, the ball rockets across the keeper and into the net, Also appearing is David Beckham's half way line goal, being a fan of Beckham's, i was also glad to see it make an appearance. Throughout history there have been many fantastic goals in the Premier league, Rooney's bicycle kick is another goal, which comes to mind. The ball again is crossed in, this time Wayne Rooney caught off foot, manages to maneuver himself into a position to kick the ball over his head and into the goal. Man Utd have never been short of spectacular players, scoring brilliant goals. Great stuff. - James
